In The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen we finished the book this week. We have a group of four (Joey, Sam, Me, and Phoenix) so we were able to get ahead and finish. In the last couple chapters of the book Henry finally tell what happens on the night of April 30. In that section of the book he tells us about how Jesse was bulled and what the bully's did to him(which was kind of gross) I didn't enjoy that part of the book but it developed character for Jesse and Henry. If I could ask Henry a question it would probably be, if you helped Jesse when he was getting bullied would he have not taken his life? I choose a quote from page 206 which said " Then we should tell mom and dad what happened- And Jesse yelled at him and said NO!" If Henry told his parents what happened then maybe they could have prevented him from taking his life. For some reason when kid are being bulled they don't try and reach out for help, they keep it to them self, which never ends well.
Our group has completed the book. For me, it wasn't very interesting at first, but over time it became a somewhat enjoyable story. I can't think of anything specific in the book I don't like, however I can think of something I do like. The book is written in a journal format, and allows for a more in depth look at the character. A question I have though, is why no one said anything about Jesse being bullied, despite the multiple accounts where it was witnessed. If his parents found out they could have solved the problem. But no one said anything, leading to the development of Jesse's plan. A quote i chose was: "I really thought we could start over. Start Fresh. But I was wrong." This pretty much sums up the entire book. Henry continues again and again to try and bring things to a fresh start. He just wants to forget. But life isn't like that, we can;t just forget about our problems and expect them to go away. It's a hard thing to do, but we have to face our problems.
